Thank You!

Dear Community Meal Supporters and Friends,

As 2011 comes to an end, the board members of The Community Meal would like to extend our thanks to our friends for their generous support this year.

Throughout the year, The Community Meal fulfilled its mission to encourage and strengthen friendships, share kindness, and inspire hope in the community by the simple act of sharing a meal together as neighbors. This year we served approximately 1,400 guests at various churches and community centers in the Barrington area. The attendance at every meal in 2011 increased, some meals attendance doubled.

Our 2011 sponsors consisted of Barilla, Caribou Coffee, Costco, Einstein’s Brothers, Jimmy John's, Mitsubishi Electric, Steak 'n Shake and Superior Exhibits and Design, Inc. In December Costco donated 52 frozen turkeys, which the Community Meal distributed throughout the Barrington area and will use 12-15 for the upcoming meals. Steak-n-Shake contributed several pounds of chicken patties last month.

New volunteers for 2011 included a crew from Target, students and faculty from school district 220, and Jewel Osco employees. Many churches waived their $25 Costco cash card to allow us to replenish our supplies. The Community Meal’s hosts included: Barrington United Methodist Church, The Community Church of Barrington, First Church of Christ Scientists, Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Presbyterian Church of Barrington, St. Anne’s Catholic Church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and Salem United Methodist Church.

We send our heartfelt thanks to all who have been a part of this meal.

WHAT A MEAL! We served 250 meals tonight thanks to the help of our volunteers! What an added bonus of Chicken Parmigiana too (on behalf of Steak n' Shake)! Thank you to everyone who came and made this night yet another success. See you in cold January at St. Matthews!

Our Meal Crew from 2010!

Don't miss out on our December Community Meal. This meal offers a warm dinner and a friendly atmosphere. In years past, we've had live piano music and live opera singing! Greencastle Manor has been generous enough to host every December meal we've had!

Come join us on Thursday, December 15th from 5-7 pm to experience what our December meals are all about. Park in the rear (at the train station) or on the street. There are plenty of spots in the back. Look for our signs leading you to the meal.

Greencastle Manor is located at 445 E Main Street in Barrington. It is the brown building next to Dunkin Donuts and across the street from the old Hollywood Video & Shell Station (corner of Northwest Highway and Main Street).

Thank you to First Church of Christ Scientists for bringing your volunteers and helping coordinat the event. And a big thank you to Barilla Pasta for donating 100 pounds of pasta & 48 jars of sauce!

We would like to sincerely thank Barilla Pasta, Inc. for donating 100 pounds of pasta & 48 jars of Tomato Basil sauce to The Community Meal!

All of this pasta & sauce will go to great use at our December 15th meal, where we hope to serve over 200 this year!

Also, a big thank you to David Guttman & Shelley Graser from Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. They helped secure (and load) this excellent donation for us!

The Salem United Methodist Church is up for it! And they are offering up their beautiful church for everyone and anyone to come in and enjoy this warm meal!

Salem United Methodist will be hosting the August Community Meal on August 17, 2011 from 5-7 pm. Salem is located at 115 W Lincoln Avenue in Barrington (near the Canteen restaurant on Main Street).

Happy 2 Year Anniversary Community Meal!

On Thursday, May 19th, The Community Meal will celebrate it's 2 year anniversary at The Lutheran Church of the Atonement.

The Lutheran Church of the Atonement was where the first meal was held on May 20th, 2009. It was started as a result of the economy and a way to reach out to the community. To date, The Community Meal has served over 2,400 people and over 300 pounds of sauce!

We have continued to grow in attendance and serve many different variations of your normal home cooked pasta & sauce, salad, and bread. Some churches have made homemade meatballs while others have made fresh spring salads with fruit!

This meal will be a special event meant to be enjoyed by everyone in the community. We will be serving pasta & sauce, salad, bread, and dessert. We are very thankful to Panera, Jimmy Johns, Einsteins, Costco, and Superior Exhibits by Design, Inc. for all of their generous donations that they have given over the years.

Be sure to bring your appetite for cake to celebrate! Hope to see everyone there!

The Barrington United Methodist Church will be hosting a Community Meal on Wednesday, March 23rd from 5-7 pm. Since the Methodist Church is a little bit of a hike from downtown Barrington, they have partnered up with St. Michael's Episcopal on Dundee Avenue in the town of Barrington. St. Michael's will hold the meal in their Community Room in the heart of the church. Extra parking is located in the back of the church and also on Dundee Avenue!

Welcome to The Community Meal Website!

The Community Meal was created at The Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Barrington, IL. Our goal is to encourage and strengthen friendships, share kindness and inspire hope in the Barrington area community by the simple act of sharing a meal together as neighbors. This is a FREE meal open to everyone in the community.

Many flyers have been given to church members church leaders in the community asking for their participation and food donations. We have also passed out different flyers as an invitation to local food banks, community centers, YMCA's, and townships in the area to come and share a meal with us. We hope to gain support from every organization that we can.

We believe that in times of need and economic downturn, we should be helping strengthen our community and getting to know our neighbors better.

We look forward to seeing you!
